top local music production of international standard; the “hk-styled-gospel blues” is so touching; the positive messages are what the city and the world need now…cheers
Not only does The Chimes album excel in the local Gospel music scene but also goes beyond borders in all respects – the original scores, the sound quality, the vocals, the ‘internationalness’ of the musicians and the messages. Never has an album amalgamate so many different music genres as well as musicians from different walks of life to jointly perform – all in the name of the Almighty! The Chimes should definitely be replicated in different languages to continue to spread the Messages and touch people’s hearts =)
Fantastic!! A rare treat in Hong Kong’s music scene! Everything – the music, the performance, the lyrics, the arrangement… just captured my heart! Even though I am not a Christian, not only that I have nothing against this Gospel album, I felt that I know more about the Gospel!
Unbelievable! I have all the reasons to believe that “The Chimes” is gonna be one of the classic albums in HK Music History!!! It has already made a permanent mark on HK’s Gospel scene too! Amazing… let me tell you why…
1. Wide varieties of musical styles: jazz, gospel, blues, spirituals, bossa nova, r&b, hip-hop, chinese fusion, flamenco, reggae, cantopop, classic rock… you name it!!!
2. HK’s Buena Vista Social Club: The Chimes Gospel Club is nothing but the cream of the best musicians in Hong Kong, including Eugene Pao, Ted Lo, Tommy Ho, Barry Chung, Joey Villanueva, Roel Garcia, Sylvain Gagnon, Anthony Fernandes, Hou Shih-Chieh, Raymond Au Wing Choi, etc etc etc
3. Star-studded guest singers: Grammy Gospel Nominee Howard McCrary, audiophile queen Mimi Lo Man Chong, HK’s own gospel queen Mimi Tang, Eternity Girls, and special cameo appearance by Chet Lam!! That’s a surprise!
4. Sterling sound mastering by king of mastering – Greg Calbi!!
If there’s one album that you have to buy in 2009… it has to be “The Chimes”!
And of coz…
5. The newly discovered talents of the Chung Brothers! Henry & Roger!
Way to go! Extremely talented brothers. The songs on the CD are pretty amazing. Not only is there a huge variety of music styles but each song has its own meaning and story. The music actually captures the audience and is definitely one of those CDs that doesn’t get boring after listening to it over and over again. The lyrics of each song are meaningful and, along with the music, most impressively written by the brothers themselves. Coupled up with good production, sound quality and the performance of other top musicians, this CD is more than a hit!
Gospel blues of the highest international standard. Great ambiance with wide audiophile-esque recording. Nice mastering work by Greg Calbi of Sterling Sound. The vocal duet between Chung and Howard McCrary on “Soul Serenade II” is particularly soul-stirring. Nice cameo performances by Mimi Lo, Chet Lam, Raymond Au, and Erhu Master Hou Shih-Chieh.
With an album like this, the Canto-pop market should make an introspection of itself. Highly recommended album!
is the perfect phrase to describe what happened after I first listened to the album. With the nicely written melody and lyrics, I can feel my spirit is watered and the songs just keep on playing in my mind…how wonderful!
I am proud to say this is truly a great piece of work! No one should miss it!
Gospel or not, “The Chimes” is hands down the best Cantopop/Asian-pop album of 2009. When it comes awards season, this album should be fondly remembered as a critical and popular favourite!
Finally, an album Hong Kong can be proud of since Eason Chan’s “Happy Days”.
超强勁的音樂人陣容: Ted Lo, Tommy Ho, Eugene Pao, Mike Carr, Sylvain Gagnon, Howard McCrary, Bob Mocarsky..just to name a few,當然還有鍾氏兄弟,差不多每一個都可以在樂壇獨當一面。 Must Buy!!”
It is not surprised that The Chimes is very popular in the Gospel music, because u really have the heart to produce the album, although i am not a christian, i can feel the love from the album, feel the love from the God, it touch my heart!
I’m voting “鐘聲The Chimes” for Top 10 albums of the year 2009!! Simply a classic!
Pastorius, I agree with you 100%. I vote “The Chimes 鐘聲” as No. 1 album of 2009 alongside Khalil’s “Orange Moon.” (can’t decide which one is better!) “Timeless” not so good, but still better than most releases in 2009. Crowd Lu “7 Days” also good, but not great…
lilylam121, I think that’s an exaggeration you’re making there… I mean… we all know that we’re living in a commercial world… how sad… despite how great the music is in 鐘聲, we all know that 鐘聲 won’t get nominated for any of the 4 so-called “major” award ceremonies because 鐘聲 is not a really commercial stuff. There’s really not much justice in the whole cantopop awarding system. Look at Grammy! They have awards for all kinds of music genres, not only pop!! Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Classical, what have you! But not here in HK… sigh…
鐘聲 is indeed a classic in the way that its music is groundbreaking for both Gospel and non-Gospel markets(I even think that Khalil must have borrowed some musical ideas from the song 騷靈頌 for his rendition on 月亮代表我的心), it’s probably the first Cantonese Gospel CD that ranks at the top of Jazz/Classical charts in stores, and seriously… who write music like this these days in HK? I mean… listen to 騷靈頌… pulling all kinds of gospel, jazz and blues elements, and yet it work so well with Cantonese! Simply an amazing arrangement! My only wish is that if any music critic is just, please include this album as the one of the top 10 albums in HK… in my opinion, this is definitely a top 100 classics in the history of HK music (if there’s such list)! In terms of music and production, probably top 10 of all time!

How come there’s no review from 3cmusic yet? I think this album deserves one! This CD… I listen to it over and over these days!!
